We initiate and partner in cutting-edge research projects to stay on the leading edge of innovation
Our vision is to be a leading provider of operational services, with global coverage, significantly increasing the use of earth observation derived information for water health, safety and management
RealTime services for management
CYANOLAKES provides services which assist in the management of aquatic ecosystems by providing realtime information and forecasts on cyanobacteria blooms and water nutrient pollution using earth observation satellite remote sensing technology.
CYANOLAKES uses cutting-edge technology to derive information from satellites orbiting the earth in space. Using earth observation is a cost effective and efficient method for providing information services aimed at the protection of public health.
Keneilwe Hlahane has won the Esri South Africa Young Scholar Award for her project titled, “Monitoring Eutrophication in the Vaal Dam South Africa, using GIS Techniques”. As the winning young scholar, Keneilwe will be presenting her project at the ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, United States of America, July 2017. During the Special Read more about Student awarded ESRI Young Scholar Award[…]
As of March 2016, we have begun operational processing and serving data from the Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI). The Earth Observation National Eutrophication Monitoring Programme (EONEMP) service provides information on the health risk from cyanobacteria and nutrient pollution in 100+ South African water bodies. Click here to view the live website. This Read more about Cyanobacteria services from Sentinel-3 go live![…]

Field validation This past week, we had a successful field campaign at Roodeplaat Dam near Pretoria. The aim was to collect key data for validation of the Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument, to feed back to the Sentinel-3 Validation Team during the instrument commissioning phase. Roodplaat represents the most extreme case when it comes to inland Read more about Validation @ Roodeplaat Dam[…]
This week CyanoLakes is working with CSIR to validate Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument. We will be making measurements at Roodeplaat Dam, near Pretoria, simultaneous to the Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-2 overpasses. We are collecting measurements of the surface reflectance of the small turbid water body, as well as measurements of atmospheric conditions. Using these data Read more about Sentinel-3 validation[…]
CyanoLakes attended the WISA conference in Durban from 15 to 19 May. Mark had the opportunity to present his research on the state of South African dams and on commercial applications for the water sector. He also participated in the WRC organised workshop on the State of SA dams. View the full research abstract paper below. WISA_2016_full_paper
