Tridonic UK is investing in facilities and staff to maximise on the opportunities

Tridonic UK, a leading manufacturer and enabler for smart, connected lighting, has opened a Technology Hub at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London and invested in a new Connected Lighting Academy, in its Basingstoke headquarters. These investments are central to its digital and business transformation strategy, designed to help support and educate its OEM partners through training on the company's latest products. This includes net4more and basicDIM Wireless, and will enable partners to learn more about the opportunities for connected lighting and how best to sell these complex, integrated lighting solutions. Simon Blazey, Strategic Solutions Sales Manager, Tridonic, said; "The ubiquitous nature of light, in our buildings and the wider urban environment, combined with advancements in technology means that lighting is set to be the communications backbone for the smart buildings and smart cities of the future. The London hub is intended as a 'Think tank' to help incubate ideas around real business issues, through demonstrations of our technology and help visitors to gain an understanding of how the many building technologies deployed today can interoperate." He continued; "Our first OEM has already undergone training at the Academy and they were excited about the new opportunities that are opened up with our products and solutions." Newbury Electronics' expertise and fabrication skills save the day

When Trevyn Rayner-Canham, a BA Industrial Design and Technology student in her final year at Brunel University, realised that she needed guidance in regard to the electronic elements of her personal stress sensor design, she turned to Newbury Electronics. With her project deadline looming, Trevyn needed to work with a company that could translate her rudimentary design specifications into a fully functioning PCB in just one week. The initial mock-up electrical circuit was fabricated using connected stock electronics. However, after discussing the requirements in more detail it was suggested that using micro-electronic components would deliver a far more precise level of biodata capture. The challenge then was to get the board not only manufactured in time but, also to ensure that the electronic component would sit within a specified graphical shape that was key for the aesthetics of the sensor. This is highly unusual as many products are designed to fit around the PCB.

Report on West Berkshire DAA's successful 'Understand Stand Together' conference now available

The organisers of West Berkshire DAA's first conference aimed at exploring how West Berkshire and similar rural communities could become a better place to live for those living with dementia, have now produced a detailed report on the event. The document provides an overview of the day's presentations, as well as listing all the pledges made of the day, some of which have already been implemented. Sue Butterworth, Programme Support Officer, Healthy Communities, West Berkshire Council, said; "There was so much energy and information shared at the conference, along with a real willingness to improve things in West Berkshire, for those living with dementia. Several organisations that attended have already developed their pledges into actions and we hope that others will be enthused to take action."

Kommerling responds to market demand with new improved adhesives for automotive and bodywork sectors

Kommerling UK has announced that its new adhesive, Korapop 257 is now available to the UK market following a robust testing procedure carried out in collaboration with one of the country's leading truck and trailer manufacturers. The one-component sealant has been developed in response to market demand for improved sealant performance in the areas of weather and moisture resistance. Ian Little, Key Account Manager, Engineering Adhesives EIMEA, for Kommerling said; "The majority of caravans, trailers and vans are constructed with a predominantly white body. As these vehicles travel along the roads tiny particles of dust and dirt are trapped by the surface tension of the sealants on the bodywork joints. However, Korapop 257 has been developed to deliver a high-performance sealant that greatly reduces the retention and collection of dirt particles on the vehicle bodywork."

High Spec Glass targets the laminated glass market

High Spec Glass (HSG) is a newly formed company providing specialist lamination, bonding and installation services to key architects and constructors across the south of the country. Established by Martin and Mark Shorney, who both have extensive experience in the production of liquid and foil lamination and high performance, laminated glass substrates, the company has already undertaken the multi-lamination of thick decorative glass for the prestigious and complex "Sundial" art installation in Staffordshire. Mark Shorney, founder, HSG, said; "The industry focus on lamination techniques to create ever more complex constructions requires processors to demonstrate the highest levels of awareness of both their processes and the required specifications. Overwhelming response to first two Death Caf�s

Following the overwhelming success of her first two Death Cafes, Neeta Madahar will be co-hosting a third event on Saturday June 15th from 2-4pm in Hamstead Marshall Village Hall. The objective of a Death Cafe is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'. The 2-hour informal gathering, for which there is no fee, will allow people to gather, eat cake, drink tea and discuss death under Neeta's guidance. Booking is essential as places are limited. Ben attended one of Neeta's earlier events and this is what he said; "I went to the death cafe out of curiosity never having been to one before. It was a super interesting experience. Conversation was open and lively with plenty of laughter, some sadness and absolutely no pressure to talk unless we wanted to. What I didn't expect was getting a light bulb moment on my own feelings about death! It was a genuinely uplifting afternoon and highly recommended. I'll definitely be going again." Newbury Electronics delivers further improvements in productivity with two new pick and place machines.

Newbury Electronics commitment to improving its productivity, whilst maintaining the highest level of production, has received a significant boost this month with the installation of two new pick and place machines. This new equipment means that Newbury Electronics will have a complement of ten Yamaha I-pulse M20 and S20 SMD pick and place machines. John Rowley, managing director, Newbury Electronics; said; "We are delighted that we have been able to upgrade our facilities with these new machines. The old equipment has served us well but we will now be able to unify all feeder set-up, programming, training and maintenance on one machine family type. We anticipate that this will deliver a 15 percent improvement in productivity throughout the SMD placement department. The old, retired equipment was only bought in 2007 and 2010, but now no longer meets the technical demands of our clients. Our two new Yamaha S20 machines will double the speed of placement and meet all known technical needs of our customers in respect of electronic assembly. So, in addition to the 15 percent productivity improvements, we will also realise a 25 percent capacity increase as well."

Southern Maintenance Solutions moves to new, larger premises and extends capabilities

Southern Maintenance Solutions UK Ltd (SMS), a well-established and successful provider of comprehensive commercial heating and cooling services, has relocated its business to new, larger premises on the Youngs Industrial Estate, Aldermaston, Berkshire. The company, which employs 17 engineers and a team of five support staff, has grown significantly in the last decade and recorded a �2.2million turnover last year. Kevin Tarbox, managing director, said; "This is an exciting time for SMS. Facilities managers need to balance a comfortable working environment, with the ever-increasing need reduce energy consumption and costs. By investing in our support and maintenance programmes, they can be confident that their equipment and plant is functioning in both a safe and efficient way." First West Berkshire DAA event an overwhelming success

Both the organisers and the attendees of last week's conference aimed at exploring how West Berkshire and similar rural communities can become a better place to live for those living with dementia, have declared the event an overwhelming success. Over 90 delegates from health and social care, local businesses, the voluntary sector and local government heard from some of the country's leading experts into dementia research, community planning and residential design. Delegates also heard an enlightening and entertaining presentation from Hilary Doxford, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease at the age of 53 and is co-founder of the 3 Nations Dementia Working Board and a member of the Government's Dementia Programming Board. Greg Walsh, Chairman, West Berkshire DAA. Said; "We are thrilled with the response we had from delegates to last week's event. The energy, enthusiasm and commitment to make changes was evident in everyone you spoke with. Even if only half the pledges that were made are implemented, West Berkshire is going to be an even better place to live for us all."

Space is the final frontier for Newbury Electronics' PCBs

Not content with supplying prototype PCBs for everyday designs and developments, some of Newbury Electronics recent boards are being used in the development of a space borne GPS receiver. This is the latest in a string of projects that the company has completed for Dr Ben Kieniewicz, founder and director of European Engineering & Consultancy (EECL). The design was a preliminary run to allow EECL to test the design at a fraction of the cost of using a dedicated, high reliability manufacturer with extensive experience of space hardware production. Dr Kieniewicz, said; "We are working on several projects here at EECL. The most notable of which are a space borne RF front end for a cutting-edge GPS receiver to give a spacecraft millimetre positioning accuracy, and a novel Analog Beam Former Network for the European Space Agency. These designs typically require a degree of prototyping to get the best possible performance and having a partner that we can rely on to keep the budget on track, and who is willing and able to correct a situation if things go wrong is extremely important. We use Newbury Electronics for all the prototype runs as they are an excellent producer of quick turnaround, quality hardware."

Transdek choose to stick with Kommerling

Transdek, an award-winning designer and manufacturer of double deck trailers and associated loading bay solutions, has extended its relationship with Kommerling by using a selection of the company's products on ten refrigerated Wedge trailers.The 4.95 metre high trailers offer a 90 roll cage (850mm x 753mm) capacity, and are based on a 5th wheel height of 1160mm, which provides sufficient internal height clearance to fully load each deck over the neck. Tony Sturgess, Director (Trailer Design), Transdek UK Ltd, said; "Transport efficiency is key and achieving the highest performance for each and every vehicle starts with the design and construction. We've worked with Kommerling to produce a fully bonded body construction on these latest trailers in our range of innovative, high volume double deckers. The trailers don't require any mechanical fasteners to hold the body together. Even the second deck support angles are bonded to the side panels. High performance structural bonding products ensure a robust structure for the trailer with bonds that are flexible but also resistant to water ingress."Bonding is more common on the Continent, but is being used increasingly in the UK to replace traditional mechanical fasteners. Bonding load restraint tracks to side panels, for example, gives far greater strength, as the adhesives spread the load along the track length.

Local yoga teacher to host Newbury's first Death Caf�

Neeta Madahar, a well-known local yoga teacher, will be co-hosting Newbury's first Death Caf� on Saturday March 23rd in the Village Hall, Hamstead Marshall. The objective of a Death Cafe is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'. The 2-hour informal gathering, for which there is no fee, will allow people to gather, eat cake, drink tea and discuss death under Neeta's guidance. "Death is something that none of us can escape but which is rarely talked about openly and honestly. Recently, through both my teaching and personal experiences, I have become more aware of the taboo that surrounds discussing death. As more people die in care homes, hospices and hospitals rather than in their own homes and communities it has become increasingly detached from our day to day lives;" explained Neeta

New MD takes control of Highnett Controls

After 40 years of being in charge, Stewart and Christine Highnett, founders and directors of the Highnett Group, are relinquishing their roles and handing control of the company to Toby Bartlett and Nicky Varley. The company, which is based in Newbury, manufactures control and instrumentation systems and carries out electrical and mechanical installation, maintenance and servicing across a range of sectors including steel, gas and water works, renewable energy control panels and bespoke R & D panels. New managing director, Toby Bartlett, has been working at Highnett Ltd for the last six years so has a clear understanding of the business. "This is an amazing opportunity and I am determined to build on the success and reputation of the company. Creating Agile and Adaptable learning spaces

As more and more aspects of our lives become connected the need for bespoke electronics continues to grow. One of the most eye-catching ideas currently under development is that of 'intelligent furniture'. Armor Associates is working with an innovative furniture company to manage their Intelligent Furniture Programme. They "Plan, design and manufacture furniture to support and inspire learning and make your space work better for you". There is increasing use of mobile devices (tablets, chromebooks, laptops) in schools and thus a need to securely store and charge devices so that they are available for teachers when needed. The next generation of "Charging Trolleys" are internet connected and intelligent - supporting notifications (e.g. of number of devices charging, doors unlocked outside teaching hours, location of trolley), remote control (via a web app) and smart charging of devices to save energy and be confident that devices will be ready when needed by a teacher. Will Steen, founder and director of Armor Associates, explains more; " Soon after starting work on the Intelligent Furniture Programme, we realised that we needed an electronics design partner and a local PCB assembly service. G-Smatt celebrates a successful first year in the UK

Its innovative, smart glass media solution is generating enquiries from both the events sector as well as opportunities for pop-up retail units, hospitality and construction. Visitors to this year's Boomtown Festival will see 13 of the G-Tainers installed to form Bang Hai Technologies, the headquarters of the "in world" Bang Hai Corporation and the hub for the events digital innovations. Most recently visitors to London will have been able to witness the interactive and creative capabilities of the glass as one of the G-Tainers was installed behind the Royal Exchange in Threadneedle Street as part of this year's London Festival of Architecture (LFA), of which G-Smatt was also a lead sponsor.

PCBs for smarter H20

When Mitte, the Berlin based company behind the revolutionary first of its kind, smart water system, was unable to obtain PCBs from its regular Chinese supplier, they need an alternative supplier, and quickly. After a search on the web, the company approached Newbury Electronics. The two companies started working together earlier this year and since then the relationship has developed further with Newbury Electronics now supplying prototypes, PCB's, fabrication and assembly services. The boards were initially installed in the prototype machine which is now being used for further board testing and to verify and test the PCB design. The boards will form part of the control system, UI & sensor feedback in the water filter unit.

New distributor agreement for Weld Mount products

Kommerling UK has announced the appointment of Albert Jagger as distributor for the Weld Mount range of bonding and sealant products, ideal for the marine market. The heart of the Weld Mount System is its acrylic adhesives which have been specifically formulated to be used with other products from the range. They are high strength/high viscosity methacrylate's with incredible strength in both tensile and in shear. G-Smatt completes one of the largest glass LED media façades image

G-Smatt Europe's parent company, G-Smatt, has successfully completed the installation of what is believed to be one of the world's largest installations of an architectural LED media glass fa�ade. The innovative glass has been installed on the Coex Convention & Exhibition Centre, in Samseong-dong of Gangnam-gu district in Seoul, South Korea. The project took three months to install and was completed in December last year. There were a number of challenges facing the team as the building remained open throughout the construction process. So, whilst the G-Smatt media glass could be installed during the day, all the associated welding and painting had to be carried out overnight

G-Smatt installs smart glass tunnel for 'Who's Who in events'

Oxford based G-Smatt recently show cased its innovative, smart glass to the local events industry when it installed its smart glass tunnel at a networking event, hosted by monocom at MINI Plant Oxford. The tunnel, which is formed from G-Smatt's interactive, media glass measured 2.25m wide by 6.3m long, and 2.5m tall and provided a stunning centre piece for the evening event which was attended by approximately 70 people from corporates including John Lewis, HSBC, Nielsens, The Dorchester Group and representatives of local events management, audio visual, catering and photography businesses. The company also delivered a short presentation on the future of architectural media glass.

A quantum leap in the quality of Tunable White systems

Second generation Tunable White systems consist of two to six linear or area LED modules and corresponding DALI DT8 LED drivers. They cover the entire colour temperature spectrum from 2,700 to 6,500 K, have an extended dimming range down to 3 percent and, together with appropriate control components, provide the hardware basis for human centric lighting. Tridonic's new Tunable White systems (SELV) fit in first-generation non-SELV housings but offer even better quality of light, high visual comfort and unprecedented colour consistency. This combination is of great benefit for offices, shops, educational establishments and medical facilities because the right light can be produced for any particular lighting application. Preconfigured kits are available comprising two to six LLE or QLE Premium LED modules and associated low-profile DALI DT8 drivers in 50 or 100 W versions.

Kommerling appoints Solvochem as its Middle-East distributor

Kommerling UK, manufacturer of the Cilbond range of rubber to metal bonding agents, has announced the appointment of Solvochem FZCO as the distributor for the Cilbond range in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) region. The agreement came into force at the start of the year and Solvochem will initially supply Cilbond to existing end-users in the UAE, and then explore and support new opportunities throughout the GCC region. Solvochem FZCO has a state-of-the-art warehouse and drumming facility in Jebel Ali, where they will stock and distribute the Cilbond grades. The company will be working with any organisations who are bonding rubber and polyurethane to different substrates, including producers of rollers, bridge bearings, anti-vibration parts and industrial tank linings.

Kommerling to focus on window bonding at Fensterbau

The company will be focusing its stand on the productions and solutions is provides for the bonding of the IG-unit into the frame. This includes solutions for a range of materials including PVC, wood and aluminium frames. G-Smatt Europe has announced the appointment of a new Lead App Developer as well as two new team members, who are taking on admin roles to support the company's growing business. Stefano Bianchi, will work closely with clients to develop their own unique apps and games that will utilise the full potential of the company's interactive media glass. "We are delighted that Stefano has brought his extensive design and development skills to the company. His knowledge and experience across the international advertising, show and events industries combined with a great understanding of the technology makes him the ideal person for this key role;" said Orhan Ertughrul, Executive Vice President, G-Smatt Europe. Taking on the role of PA for Orhan is Teodora Ungurusan, who previously worked in similar support roles in both the NHS and the private medical sector. Also new to the office team is Mohammed Hamza, finance manager, who joined the company in November. In response to the business' expected growth in the coming year, Lucy Muxlow has relinquished her role as PA to take on the position of Project Manager. She will be working closely with the sales team to ensure the smooth delivery of installations across the company's key areas of events, hospitality and retail.

Oxford Brookes students given the opportunity to develop new application with G-Smatt Europe

Six final-year students from Oxford Brookes University who are studying for their BSc in Digital Media Production, were given the opportunity to work with Oxford-based company, G-Smatt Europe. Students began the semester working in teams to create a small business with a website, showcasing their personal portfolios and identify an ideal client base. They were then required to pitch to a selection clients provided by their module leader, Senior Lecturer in Film and Digital Media, Dr Alison Kahn. "We were delighted to get involved with the students and to have the opportunity to share our knowledge and experience. Our media glass is the ideal platform on which these students can develop some of their ideas and show their true creativity," said Orhan Ertughrul, Executive Vice-President, G-Smatt Europe. G-Smatt Europe, developer of G-Smatt media glass, has appointed Sanmukh Bawa as Director of Engineering. Prior to this role Sanmukh, who studied Civil and Structural Engineering at Coventry University, had spent 6 years with leading London consultants, Eckersley O'Callaghan. OLE develops and manufactures specialist gauges for the downstream fuel industry and water industry to provide just such information. George Chaffey, a second-year student at CSM, (Central St Martins) has just completed the design, construction and installation of a unique piece of work for leading caterer H+J which launched its fashion-themed spring menu at Dartmouth House. The piece was unveiled at the launch event, held last week at the Mayfair venue and incorporated over 8,000 laminated 3cm squares of fabric. Using colours inspired by Pantone's top fashion colours for SS17, George combined traditional woven textile design techniques to create this dramatic wall of colour. George explained more about the thinking behind his design; "This bespoke commission for H+J uses bitesize segments of colour that take their reference from the idea of the classic canap�. Translated into fabric swatches and multiplied by the thousands, each 'colour canap�' becomes a unit, almost acting as a pixel, with each one linking to those around it." Designed in the same way as a traditional woven fabric, the piece uses a classic twill structure on a point, set up to create the dramatic zig-zag patterns, with the colours blending into each other to create a sense of movement and transition. Subtly moving in response to movement in its environment, the piece has both an ethereal and bold feel to it. George is currently studying BA Textile Design at the world renowned Central Saint Martins, where he also completed his Foundation Diploma. His passion for textiles stems from a love of design in general, and he takes inspiration from a diverse range of areas including sculpture, architecture, music and the patterns and prints found on a day to day basis, always bringing his distinctive colourful style to any project. He has worked on exciting projects with museum archives, practicing designers and the Paris College of Art. George was also selected as one of 20 students to work with Universal Pictures on the Minions Collective, which formed part of the worldwide promotion for the Minions Movie (2015). In 2014 George was named as Young Fashion Designer of the Year; UK South.

Newbury Innovation sponsors Bath University's Zero Emissions Motorcycle team

Following the success of its involvement with last year's team, Newbury Innovation has agreed to sponsor the 2016-17 Bath Zero Emissions Motorcycle team. The team, which consists of 34 students studying engineering will design and build a bike to compete in the MotoE season in the summer of 2017. They are aiming to be the first university team to pass the 100mph average speed barrier for the Isle of Man TT Zero course and to improve on the two podium finishes achieved in last year's race series by their predecessors. Under the terms of the agreement Newbury Innovation and its sister company Newbury Electronics will work with the students and provide PCBs up to a value of �500. Following a two year development programme, Rowan Engineering Ltd has launched its new, innovative telescopic sight accessory, the Digital Side Wheel (DSW), to the sport shooting community. Throughout this protracted period of development Newbury Electronics has been working in close conjunction with company founders and product developers, Derek and David Rose. The DSW is a low cost accessory which helps target shooters train themselves by measuring and reporting some of the variables that effect the accuracy of a shot in the split second when the trigger is pulled. Derek Rose explained more about working with Newbury Electronics; "We came across Newbury Electronics on one of the online forums and when doing Internet searches. We soon recognised that they had the capability and skills that we needed to make our initial designs a reality. It was really important that we could visit the facilities and this gave us confidence in their capability to deliver our design, from procurement of components from our BOM to final assembly and delivery of the working PCB. This was especially important to us as we are primarily a 'mechanical' company. This device does not push the boundaries technically, but does contain small QFN, LGA devices along with a mix of standard SMT, through hole and flexible PCB soldered OLED components ."

Newbury Electronics' connection with the National Oceanographic Centre (NOC) in Southampton started in the early 1990s. Since then both the research science and PCB manufacturing processes have made considerable advancements but Newbury Electronics has kept pace with the scientific demands and continues to supply an extensive range of bespoke boards to the NOC, an internationally renowned research organisation. James Perrett, member of the NOC's Marine Autonomous Robotic Systems group, explains more about the latest joint project; "The group is increasingly utilising cutting-edge technology, with tools such as Autosub6000 and ROV Isis which are enabling high-resolution mapping of geological and biological hotspots, e.g. hydrothermal vent systems, submarine canyons and giant landslides. The battery boards in the Autosub6000 are used in an oil filled container which is pressure balanced so that the electronics are at the same pressure as the surrounding water." To date Newbury Electronics has supplied 60 such boards. "When we are designing this equipment we have always found the team at Newbury Electronics extremely helpful and their depth of knowledge and willingness to work with us overcoming some of the challenges that are presented when operating such sophisticated equipment at such deep levels as has been invaluable," commented Perrett. Another of the more recent boards that NE has supplied was the power board for the EM2040, an advanced multi-beam sonar system that creates high resolution 3D maps of the seabed. The board is used to convert the standard 48V vehicle power to the voltages required by the system and it also provides power supply protections and other housekeeping functions. Newbury Electronics works with Downton Technology on the development of LED Traffic Signal Detector

In response to the need for more stringent monitoring of traffic light phasing for the purposes of enforcing violations, Downton Technology Limited (DTL) has developed an LED interface for use between UK traffic signal heads and enforcement cameras. Newbury Electronics has provided PCB development expertise using DTL designs to enable manufacture of the product. The system interacts with a wide range of LED signal heads and enforcement cameras to monitor the amber and red aspects, detect when they are operating correctly and sends signals to the red light camera. The current detection systems do not support LED signal heads. Natasha Downton, Technical Director, Downton Technology Ltd, explained more; "The LED Traffic Signal Detector system is designed to monitor the red and amber aspects of LED traffic lights and, when the correct conditions are met, notifies the enforcement camera. The camera shall then detect and photograph a vehicle crossing the stop line of a light controlled road junction. In order to do this we have had to incorporate a number of sensors that can detect when the amber or red lights are illuminated, for how long each light is illuminated and if light settings are complying with regional metrology requirements." Tridonic Distribution appoints northern sales manager to service OEM market

Tridonic Distribution has appointed Heidi De Lucchi to the post of Northern OEM Sales Manager. In this role, Heidi will develop Tridonic Distribution's business with OEMs to the north of the county and also those located in Ireland and Scotland. Newbury Electronics invests in latest X-ray machine technology to keep ahead of the game.

Newbury Electronics has made a financial investment of �100K and purchased a new, highly accurate X-ray reference hole drilling machine, the Antares 700 X. The machine has already been installed in the company's manufacturing centre in Newbury and enhances the performance of drilling equipments that enables the precision required in modern day electronic component manufacture. "As electronics become more miniaturised, we need ever more accurate machinery, and the installation of this world class machine will keep us ahead of the game. I saw it at a trade show in Munich last November, and was so impressed I ordered it there and then;" said Philip King, managing director at Newbury Electronics. The machine can measure multiple fiducial markers by x-ray, and calculate the optimised position and drill registration holes within 12 seconds to an accuracy of +/- 0.003mm, far exceeding the accuracy levels of previous equipment. Manufactured by Mach3 Lab SRL from Italy, this is the first of its type to be installed in the UK although there are many installations operating across Europe.

Kommerling's relationship with Cornwall Glass Group further strengthened

Cornwall Glass and Glazing Ltd (CGG), a leading supplier of glass and glazing services in the south-west, has committed to using Kommerling's GD116 as its preferred sealant of use at its St Austell IG production plant. The two companies have been working together for over 11 years and this is the latest in a number of agreements for Kommerling to supply products from its extensive range of sealants and adhesives to Cornwall Glass. The two companies will also be working together in the future as Kommerling will be supplying product to CGG's new production facilities. Westcountry Glass is expanding and re-located from Saltash to Langage in Plymouth this month, to a site that quadruples the size of its production facilities and creates up to 40 new jobs Martin Saint, Production Director, at St Austell, said; "We are seeing an increasing demand for IG units which these latest developments are designed to satisfy. Kommerling's products help Transdek to deliver award winning double-deck trailer

Transdek's award winning double deck trailer and docking system was built using a number of products from Kommerling's extensive range of sealants and adhesives, which are specifically designed to meet the needs of this niche market. Transdek, specialists in the double deck sector, custom designed and built the multi-temperature Wedge double deck trailer for Thomas Ridley Food Service. The refrigerated trailer is capable of transporting up to 50 standard pallets or up to 90 roll cages, twice the load of a standard single deck reefer. Tony Sturgess at Transdek, explains more about the project; "This is a sophisticated trailer that incorporates the latest chassis design along with a low-noise, low-emission refrigeration unit as well as three independent temperature zones with a range of -20�C to +7�C. However good the efficiency of the refrigeration units their performance will be compromised if the trailer body is not well insulated and sealed and this is where Kommerling's products have come into their own." "We worked closely with the team at Transdek to understand their requirements and in the end they selected three of our products; Korapur 666, Korapur 140 and Korapop 235 to fulfil the sealing and bonding requirements on this innovative two deck trailer," said Ian Little, Business Manager for the Automotive, Construction & Industrial Division at Kommerling. A key factor in the choice of these products was their finished appearance, the quality of the final seal and their resistance to humidity, but alongside this ease of use and the environmental credentials of the range were added incentives.

Newbury Electronics' recognised expertise and experience is now being put to good use as it works with Tio on the development of PCBs for inclusion in a new invention platform. With the new Tio kit, budding electrical engineers and inventors are able to quickly and easily create, control and program toys using everyday objects, the number and variety of which are only limited by the user's imagination. Peter Spence, co-founder of Tio, explained more; "The PCB is key to the product as it powers, animates and allows the user to control and program the hardware. The team at Newbury Electronics was recommended by a colleague for the quality of their work and speed of service and we have not been disappointed. They also reviewed the designs and made recommendations that have enabled us to reduce the production costs whilst still ensuring the highest quality for the final product." The Tio team, with help from the team at Newbury Electronics, now have a works-like-looks-like prototype and a clear and reliable manufacturing plan. They are in the final stages of securing seed funding to make these a reality and plan to start accepting pre-orders on Kickstarter early next year, with a full scale launch of the product in the spring. Tridonic announced today the availability of a new Lighting Dashboard to supplement its recently introduced connecDIM lighting control solution. The benefit of the dashboard is that not only does it interface with the connecDIM system, but it also opens up the opportunity for the Tridonic system to integrate with HVAC Building Management Systems. In the last year BIZ Karts, one of the leading manufacturers of commercial karts, has purchased 4000 battery terminal PCBs and 200 of each of the necessary connector interfaces from Newbury Electronics. BIZ Karts manufactures 200+ electric karts per year and each one includes up to 20 of these battery terminal PCBs, depending on the model and size of the battery. Christopher Day, Electric Powertrain Systems Engineer for BIZ Karts, explains more about the work that Newbury Electronics has undertaken for the company. "We use three different PCBs from Newbury on our electric karts. Two are simple connector interfaces that have helped us to create a robust module that contains all our control electronics on our electric karts. The PCB's allow connection to the external components and sensors." He continued; The battery terminal PCBs are used in our lithium battery packs. They allow for a safe, fused, connection between the cells and the Battery Management System (BMS) that measures the individual cell voltages. We also include a small temperature sensor on each PCB." Newbury Electronics initially provided the prototype PCBs and were then able to replicate the same quality of parts when BIZ Karts required them in greater volume. PCBs from Newbury to Detroit

Newbury Electronics has announced that it is supplying PCBs to Detroit Electric, an innovator in the design and development of pure electric vehicles. The PCBs are a key component in Detroit Electric's development of the battery packs for the Geely Emgrand EC7 sedan, which is a medium to high end luxury brand vehicle that should be available for purchase in July 2016. John Perrott, Senior VP Supply Chain at Detroit Electric, explains how the company came to work with Newbury Electronics. "We had a tight manufacturing lead time and the company supplying the PCBs for the SP:01 units couldn't support us. Fortunately I was given the contact details for Newbury via Lotus Cars and we have not looked back since then." Newbury Electronics has supplied 675 PCB's that are used within the battery pack for measuring and monitoring the cell temperatures within the modules. These packs, sufficient for 25 vehicles, have been used to support initial pre- production build of the vehicles. The plan is to source all material locally in China for when full production commences. "Quality prototyping carried out with experienced engineers is a key part of the development of any new vehicle and we are delighted that an international company like Detroit Electric was referred to us and that we have been able to meet their demands;" said Newbury Electronics' managing director, Philip King.

Durham Cathedral in LEGO, part of the Cathedral's fundraising appeal for its �10 million Open Treasure project, was illuminated for the first time to celebrate the model's second birthday. A joint initiative between Tridonic and Thorn Lighting meant that LED light strips and the associated control equipment had been installed throughout the completed section of the model and these were switched on by the Bishop of Durham earlier this month. The design of the interior lighting for this model highlights the internal features such as the Font and the Cathedral's infamous sandstone pillars.

Newbury Electronics has recently completed its latest consignment of PCBs for Matrix Telematics, an international provider of telematics systems for vehicle management and tracking. The two companies have been working together for over five years and this success is based on; "the relationship, performance and cost," according to Matrix Managing Director, Geoff Ball. He continued; "When looking for a supplier for prototype boards it was a conscious decision on our part to find a UK supplier. Newbury Electronicswas delighted to hear that Team Impulse, a group of students from St Paul's School, London had won first place in the European CanSat 2015 competition. The company first became involved with this team of young engineers when they were asked to supply prototype PCBs back in the autumn of 2014. These were then incorporated into the satellite that secured them first place in the UK competition and took them onto the final international round, held in Lisbon, Portugal last weekend.

Tridonic Innovation - More design, less installation

As miniaturised light sources, LEDs offer great design freedom to luminaire manufacturers and interior designers. However, to date LED drivers, which are essential and need a lot more space than the light sources themselves, have placed restrictions on the design. With the new TALEXXengine DC String, Tridonic is offering an LED solution which makes AC/DC converters and DC/DC components go their separate ways, creating opportunities for new design ideas. The system supports the trend towards the miniaturisation of LED luminaires, increasing freedom of design and making installation easier at the same time. In present LED lighting solutions, each LED light source needs an LED driver which contains an AC/DC converter and a DC/DC component. The AC/DC converter takes up most of the space in the LED driver, and hence determines the component's minimum size. This component is therefore an obstacle to further miniaturising LED luminaires and increasing design freedom. Martin Thompson, Tridonic Technical Services Manager explains more about the new offering; "In the DC String LED solution, the AC/DC converter element is separated from the conventional LED drivers and installed at a central location from where it can supply LED light sources with a total output of up to 150 W in an energy-efficient way. The individual light sources, or luminaires, are now only equipped with a low-profile compact DC/DC module, or the module has already been integrated into the light source, eliminating the limitations that AC/DC converters have created so far. This gives luminaire manufacturers the opportunity of further miniaturising LED luminaires and developing even smaller lighting solutions, which blend discreetly into the room and offer impressive high system efficiency." He concludes; "Tridonic has reached a milestone in lighting design with this DC String LED solution."

Tridonic help to deliver significant savings at Bournemouth International Centre car park

The installation of approximately 400 Tridonic LED lights in the multi-story car park at Bournemouth International Centre has delivered significant savings in its first twelve months. The project to replace the original fluorescent lights was undertaken by Littledown, a specialist lighting control's company that has a long standing relationship with Tridonic. "We are investing in energy-saving initiatives across our venues which is vital to cutting energy dependence, costs and CO₂ emissions," says Peter Portnoi, Head of Facilities Management for BH Live, the social enterprise which manages Bournemouth International Centre in partnership with Bournemouth Borough Council. "Last year, our on-site electrical crew came up with the concept and designed a new, energy-efficient lighting scheme for our 650 space multi-storey car park at Bournemouth International Centre. They teamed up with the Dorset-based, family-run company, Littledown Lighting to install the system and, thanks to the new Tridonic low energy LED installation complete with motion sensors, we have saved 134378 KWh of power and reduced carbon emissions by 45% in just 12 months." Steve Reid, managing director at Littledown said; "The biggest challenge with this project was that the car-park needed to remain open throughout the three month refit but with careful planning we were able to keep disruption to a minimum. The existing fpluorescent gear trays were replaced with Tridonic's LED Boards and approximately 400 LCAI drivers. In addition to the significant savings in energy that these new fittings have delivered we expect a significant reduction in the number of lamp replacements and all the fittings carry the standard five year Tridonic warranty."

Student engineers from Kingston University have turned to Newbury Electronics for both design advice and the manufacture of a series of bespoke PCBs for use in their latest Formula Student Electric car. Engineering departments from universities from across the country compete every year in a race where conventional combustion engines compete head-to-head with alternative fuelled vehicles. Christopher Hockuba is the student team member at Kingston University responsible for Suspension & Telemetry in the 2015 vehicle, and he explains more about his work with Newbury Electronics; " Designing the telemetry system for the Formula Student car is part of my final year project. One of the measurements that we need to take from the vehicle is suspension travel and there are several ways to record this data. However the most efficient one, in terms of cost/performance, is to use a rotary hall effect sensor. The sensors needed to be I2C compatible because this standard gives a very good performance and only uses two wires for communication." He continues; Measuring suspension travel is important in a Formula Student Car as you want to have exactly the right amount of mechanical grip and this can be achieved by fine tuning dampers, anti-roll bar and the suspension geometry." In addition the boards, of which the Newbury Electronics' PCBs are an integral part, will also be used to monitor the throttle position sensors. Soundbeam, the designers and manufacturers of the Soundbeam, an award-winning 'touch free' device which uses sensor technology to translate body movement into music and sound turned to Newbury Electronics when they need PCBs for their product. Cindy Crossland, of Soundbeam explained more: "The boards have a colour membrane with the switch number attached to it. The switches that use the PCB's, are triggered by touch and are part of the Soundbeam kit that is sold with the touch free sensors. The sensors are ultrasonic, ie they detect movement however small and translate this into music and sound." The switches can operate over a distance of 20m and are colourful, versatile, tactile and most importantly sensitive to the stimuli produced by the musician. "We needed well engineered and thin PCBs for this project and Newbury Electronics worked closely with us to ensure both the high quality of the design and manufacture." She continued; We have not been disappointed and the PCBs from Newbury Electronics have proved to be very reliable." Kommerling's K�diguard liquid composite used on repairs to historic 'Libertas' monument in Estonian capital.

K�mmerling's liquid composite partner in Estonia, Andrese Klaasi, is manufacturing and installing replacement panels for the famous War of Independence Victory Monument, located in Freedom Square,Tallinn, Estonia. Illuminated from inside, the structure, known as "Liberates", provides a stunning centrepiece to the ancient capital city. Damage to the monument over the last four years has led to the replacement of six panels with another due for installation in the near future. Each panel is two metres long and varies in width between 650mm to 950mm. The glass has a depth of 50mm so the weight of the panels varies from 160kg up to 240kg. The panels have a strict specification covering the, thick, heavily decorative, tempered and textured laminated glass and are manufactured in the Andrese Klaasi AS plant , where the K�diguard liquid composite is applied. The passive curing and complicity with textured surfaces and asymmetrical substrates of the composite makes it the ideal product for this unusual project. Upon completion each panel will then be structurally bolted to the memorial. Chairman of Andrese Klaasi AS, Gerd Veelma, explained; "It is an honour to work on this memorial and to have our experience and expertise in the use of glass in construction recognised. Our capabilities have been greatly improved as a result of our recent developments and investment in processing the K�mmerling range of liquid laminating materials. This versatile range of laminating products allows us to offer products for sound reduction, safety, security and mechanical applications."

Satellite technology could become accessible to all

Newbury Electronics is helping the Satellite Applications Catapult, an innovation and technology company fostering economic growth through the exploitation of space, to bring the benefits of satellite technology to all businesses and organisations, regardless of their size. Newbury Electronics has recently used its specialist production skills to supply the Catapult with prototype circuit boards that measure 44mm x 44mm, slightly smaller than a credit card. Chris Brunskill, Upstream Technologies Lead at the Catapult, explains more; "Making satellite technology and the benefits it can deliver available to a wider audience is one of the goals of our organisation. Currently the smallest viable satellites are about the size of a loaf of bread but we have now been able to develop a prototype, the PocketQube that has the same functionality but is the size of a pack of butter and weighs only 180 grams. We couldn't have achieved this without Newbury Electronics input and specialist engineering skills and it is great that there are UK companies with this world beating knowledge and expertise." The boards were designed by two summer interns working at the Catapult and then passed to Newbury's specialist team for production. Using their experience they were able to offer advice re the orientation of the boards and were able to accommodate the changing demands of the project as it evolved over a two month period. Following an initial production of 10 boards, the company is about to start producing a second batch for use by the Catapult in a series of public events being held later in the spring.

Newbury Bobsleigh driver, Annabel Chaffey selected for international competition.

Following an impressive 2nd place finish in the first ever FIBT* international monobob race held in Lillehammer, Norway just before Christmas, Annabel Chaffey of Hamstead Marshall, has been selected to represent Great Britain again in the remaining two races of this inaugural season of competition. As the name suggests, monobobs are smaller bobsleighs designed to be pushed and driven by a single athlete and will be the only type used in next year's Youth Winter Olympic Games. Commenting on her selection, Annabel, a Year 12 student at Park House School, said; "The trip to Norway was a great experience and it was really exciting to drive the monobobs for the first time. I was delighted with my second place finish and hope to improve on that in the next two races. I am training hard at the gym to improve my strength which is key to getting a fast push start." Whilst at Lillehammer, Annabel set a world record for the Ladies' Monobob start time for the track. All being well she hopes to return to the track and defend this record in February 2016 at the Youth Olympics. Annabel, aSports Aid, funded athlete will travel out to Konigsee, Germany on February 8th, for training on this challenging track and then following the second round of races on the 13th, will travel with the rest of the GB Bobsleigh youth team to St Moritz, Switzerland for the final competition.

Newbury Electronics has used its considerable expertise and experience to help Dr Mark Holton and the Swansea Live Animal Monitoring (SLAM) group, led by Professor Rory Wilson at Swansea University, to design and produce an innovative range of extremely light weight but robust tracking devices to aid their research into previously unknown animal behaviour. Since then they have worked closely with us to design the circuit boards in the most compact way possible but in a way which still enables us to combine information from multiple sensors. Specialist software company, TWG Systems selects SIRE's cloud

TWG Systems, a specialist supplier of online systems based around Microsoft's ASP.Net technology and Sharepoint, has selected SIRE Technology to be its cloud provider. With a total of seven servers hosting their solutions, TWG is planning a phased transfer to SIRE and has already completed the first phase successfully. IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) is becoming increasingly common as the cloud based solutions are becoming more widely accepted across all aspects of industry. "It doesn't matter how good our online systems are in terms of meeting the specific needs of our clients' businesses if the servers upon which they are running are not reliable or responsive," said Andrew Twigg, managing director at TWG Systems. "Towards the end of last year this unreliability was starting to impact upon our business reputation so I knew it was time to change. It became clear that SIRE not only understand how critical the server's performance was to our sustained business success, but also shared our ethos in terms of working in partnership with customers." Russell Cook, SIRE's MD explains; "Within a couple of days of the initial enquiry we were able to provide a demonstration Virtual Private Server (VPS) solution, built to TWG's specific requirements. This was delivered using our own IBM enterprise grade server and storage hardware which is located at UK data centres. After some additional testing it was agreed that we would commence the transfer and our solution now provides support for several of TWG's clients."

Newbury Electronics welcomed local West Berkshire MP, Richard Benyon, to its premises to learn more about the company's redevelopment of its Newbury site. Work on the initial phase started in June as part of a two phase development which will ultimately provide increased production space, new offices and deliver savings in both water and electricity consumption. Philip King, managing director, explained more about the company's plans; "This first phase of development has four key objectives namely; • to replace the on-site temporary sheds, containers, and structures with a purpose built single storey storage building • to reduce water consumption by at least 50% • to reduce total factory electricity usage by 20% • to provide extra space to enable us to maintain production during the course of the second phase build. If all goes to plan both phases should be completed by the end of 2015 and we will start to see the benefits of the investments we are making."

Newbury Electronics has responded to the changing demands of PCB manufacturing and invested in a Ersa Eco-Select 1 selective soldering machine from Blundell Production Equipment. An increasing number of customers were requiring the company to solder PCBs with SMDs (surface mounted devices) on both sides, and big production bottlenecks were building up due to the need to hand solder these boards. It was also difficult to accurately price jobs as hand soldering times were unpredictable and good hand soldering operators are increasingly hard to find.

Newbury Electronics is partnering the University of Southampton and Imperial College in ground breaking research into a new approach to medical diagnostics using PCBs. Newbury Electronics has been appointed as the manufacturing partner on a new research project which is being funded by a �1 million grant, awarded by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council), for manufacturing low-cost, disposable, point-of-care, diagnostic devices. Newbury Electronics works with leading international artist

Newbury Electronics is supplying 250 individual PCBs to leading designer Moritz Waldemeyer for use in his latest project. The internationally renowned artist has been asked by the Metropolitan by COMO to participate in a charity project for their charity partner, Noah's Ark Children's Hospice. Waldemeyer's art form uses etched metal for the mechanical components and PCB's to create the structure that will be on display in the hotel lobby throughout April. The PCBs will have white LEDs on the outside and blue LEDs on the inside of the egg. "It is great to be part of a project like this which combines the latest in creative thinking with state- of- the-art production techniques to create a unique object of beauty;" said Philip King, managing director at Newbury Electronics. Explaining more about his piece, Waldemeyer said; "Essentially the egg is made from four spirals that are alternatively connected to GND and +12V. We used advance parametric 3D design to create this shape, that is both sculpture and electronic circuit at the same time. This is an innovative approach to light design that we believe has never been done before in this way. He continued; "Newbury Electronics' knowledge and understanding combined with its high production standards and levels of accuracy make them the ideal partner for this project." The finished piece will be 30 cm high.

Neil Smith appointed International Sales Manager as Polyseam looks to international markets

His remit is to recruit resellers who may be interested in supporting one or both ranges in key overseas markets. Newbury Electronics invests in leading edge technology

Newbury Electronics, one of the country's leading designers and manufacturers of printed circuit boards, has installed a laser direct imaging system that will deliver significant benefits to its clients. The new machine, a UV-P300 LDI, is manufactured by Limata, and uses the latest in laser technology to produce far more technically demanding printed circuit boards than could be achieved using the more traditional photo lithographic techniques. It is the first machine of this type to be installed in the country. Kommerling UK supplies Residence 9 fabricators with "direct glazing system".

Kommerling UK has announced that it is supplying 20 of Residence 9's fabricators with its direct glazing system. Residence 9 is rapidly establishing itself in the market as a niche, high value PVCu window system which replicates quality timber window frames by using the latest composite materials and construction methods. Dan Gill, Managing Director of Residence 9, said; "We have been working with Kommerling for some time now and their support and know how has been vital in helping us to bring this new system to the market. By using the Kommerling system our network of over 20 skilled fabricators are able to manufacture aesthetically pleasing windows which not only look great but also meet enhanced standards and the highest levels of thermal efficiency." The main Kommerling materials used are Kodiglaze SDG with Kommerling primers and cleaners. Les Elliott, Business Development Manager at Kommerling, explained more about the benefits of the Direct Glazing system; "By eliminating the need for steel or aluminium reinforcement within the PVCu profiles and replacing it with a bonded system, the thermal properties of each glazed unit (either double or triple) are greatly enhanced, which improves the overall window energy rating (WER). In addition when the glass is bonded directly into the frame, there is a significant improvement in the levels of security. The bond also reduces the amount of water which enters the window frame drainage system, resulting in improvements in both air tightness, weathering resistance and rigidity of the unit.

Berkshire Junior Badminton to undertake 24 hour badminton marathon in aid of Daisy's Dream

Berkshire Junior Badminton's combined squads will be taking part in a 24hour sponsored Badminton marathon in February to raise funds for Daisy's Dream. This local charity supports children and their families affected by both life threatening illness and bereavement, throughout Berkshire and the surrounding areas. The event will be held at Elstree School, situated in West Berkshire over the weekend of February 22nd and 23rd, 2014. "We are delighted that Berkshire Junior Badminton has selected Daisy's Dream to be the beneficiary of this amazing challenge ," said Gill Stevens from Daisy's Dream.

As the decorations are packed away for another year Community Christmas has taken a moment to reflect on the success of its campaign to reduce the number of elderly people that were alone this Christmas. The organisation's website listed over 200 locations that were able to accommodate those seeking companionship. Caroline Billington, founder of Community Christmas paid tribute to the network of volunteers across the country who organised these events and put the sparkle into Christmas for a significant number of elderly people. Final statistics are still being compiled from across the country but the organisation knows that it was able to point guests and volunteers in the right direction, and it received a lot of support from Volunteer Centres, along with individual enquiries from relatives who were not going to be around. "Whilst many of us will now put Christmas out of our mind the Community Christmas team is already planning how to make more steps towards its mission of ensuring that no elderly person in the UK is alone on Christmas Day unless they want to be......"
