I really hope the second season of Platonic explores its relationship to Invasion.

Platonic has been renewed! Given the first season ended on a pretty definitive note it will be curious to see where season two goes. I hope it immediately addresses the whole “we saw aliens” subplot by pivoting the show into being a prequel to Invasion, also on Apple TV Plus.

Instead, it will probably just continue to be a really good show about Millennials reckoning with growing old.

AI isn’t quite ready to be remastering film for 4K.

As with most things in moviemaking there’s a real art to remastering content. When it was announced that James Cameron’s True Lies was getting a proper 4K release in the U.S., folks were hopeful it would share Cameron’s knack for technical artistry.

But according to Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits the new 4K digital release from Lightstorm used 4K scans of the original negatives that were then “optimized” with deep-learning algorithms. And AI made the film look too sharp and weird (as you can see below). A shame, given they had scans of the original negative.

Roblox has a new music-themed metaverse experience, too.

The experience, called Beat Galaxy, was made in part by Universal Music Group (UMG), and features a runner / music game you can play with music from UMG artists. It’s not nearly as polished as Epic’s newly-launched Fortnite Festival, but if you’ve been looking for something like that in Roblox, Beat Galaxy is in the ballpark.

Don’t judge me, it was hard to play this game and capture screenshots.

Meet Neil the seal.

He’s an elephant seal currently riling up a community in Tasmania. He is also all over TikTok. Obviously, I’m on the side of unruly elephant seals, whether in California or elsewhere. He’s perfect and I love him.

Amazon says its Project Kuiper internet satellites will operate like a mesh network.

Here’s how Amazon describes it:

[Optical inter-satellite links] use infrared lasers to send data between spacecraft as they orbit the planet. Instead of being limited to sending data between an individual satellite and antennas on the ground, OISLs allow satellites to send data directly to other satellites in a constellation.

Every Project Kuiper satellite will have “multiple optical terminals” so that they can connect to a bunch of satellites all at once. The first production satellites are scheduled to launch in the first half of 2024.

Reddit is sunsetting its live chat posts.

You can no longer make new live chat posts, existing ones will work until early 2024, Reddit says. You’ll still be able to have live chats on Reddit, just through its Discord-like chat channels — though the chat channels are still in beta and mods have to fill out a form to request access to them for their communities.

Here’s what it’s like to watch a personal spatial video in a Vision Pro headset.

Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset can play back stereoscopic 3D video shot on iPhone 15 Pro, and CNET’s Scott Stein got to load up some of his own spatial videos on a Vision Pro and watch them:

[My mom] sort of raised her eyebrows a bit, and the way she looked at me in 3D — at a scale close to normal size, with her seeming to make eye contact — made me feel like I was almost there. It made me want to climb through that fuzzy-bordered window and join my family again on the other side.

Here’s how Spotify’s AI playlist feature might work.

One user (@robdad_) on TikTok spotted the upcoming feature, which uses AI to generate a playlist based on a prompt, like “get focused at work with instrumental electronica.” Spotify confirmed to TechCrunch that it’s testing the tool.

Google is reportedly working on an AI assistant for Pixels, called “Pixie.”

The Pixel-exclusive AI assistant will use the information on a user’s phone, such as data from Maps and Gmail, to become a more “personalized” version of Google Assistant, according to a report from The Information. The feature could reportedly launch with the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro next year.

A Threads post on Mastodon!

I’m seeing Adam Mosseri’s new Threads video when I look at his Threads account via mastodon.social on the web. It even showed up in my regular Mastodon feed! I can’t believe this actually works. Mastodon CEO Eugen Rochko is pretty excited, too.

Today on The Vergecast: a 60-year-old Mac, and Twitter In Memoriam.

I have spent an alarming amount of time in the last 24 hours reading thousands of the best tweets anyone ever tweeted. We talked about those tweets, our brushes with main-character-ness, and more. Plus, Will Poor resurrects his extremely old Macintosh, and wonders: how can I make this thing last another three decades?

Good moo-rning!

NJ Transit is delayed.

The best way to welcome Europeans to Threads.

It turns out you can use Threads’ new hashtags to troll people into clicking “show more” and actually doing a tag search instead. Threads launched in Europe today, so as these newcomers get used to a new social media home, make sure you drop a show more post into the mix. It’s harmless fun that will probably get lost in all the new conversations about fine wine, great Italian food, and the British moaning about the weather again.

So now I know I have too many iMessages backed up.

In the new iOS 17.2 update, you can easily see how many messages are backed up to iCloud alongside how much storage they’re taking up by going to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Show All > Messages in iCloud.

I’m not sure if I truly need to hold on to these forever. What is your iMessage backup looking like?

Kids filed a new lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency over climate change.

The group of 18 youth between the ages of 8 and 17 from California say that the EPA “intentionally allows life-threatening climate pollution to be emitted by the fossil fuel sources of greenhouse gases it regulates, harming children’s health and welfare.” The suit follows a major win in Montana, where another group of young people successfully sued the state for violating their right to a clean environment.

Battle royale gets radical.

Fortnite’s annual winter event kicks off today, and it will include one big addition: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The four brothers (along with April O’Neil) will be hitting the game’s item shop “soon,” according to Epic Games. The best part is they all have Lego minifig styles for playing in the game’s new survival / crafting mode.

A24 presents: Death Stranding.

The company announced that it has partnered with Hideo Kojima on the live-action film adaptation of his video game in a unique way: with a T-shirt. We still don’t know much about the movie itself, but now Kojima is working alongside the team behind the likes of Dream Scenario, Talk To Me, and Everything Everywhere All At Once. That should be exciting news for a man made out of movies.
